Proper masonry tools needed to lay a block wall. |

In the picture above, we see a normal concrete block wall with what are referred to as "furring strips" attached to the blocks. These strips of wood are anchored to the concrete block with concrete cutting tools, specifically a concrete drilling bit and a concrete punch. The holes for the furring strips are measured and marked in chalk, the concrete cutting tools, or the bit, is used after hitting the chalked mark with a concrete punch to begin the hole. Once the hole is drilled to the proper depth, a plastic or lead insert is lightly tapped into the hole and the firring strips are then attached with a screw driven through the wood into the insert. The force of the screw going into the insert expands it to a very tight fit so the furring strips stay firmly in place. This whole process is done in preparation for attaching either wall board or wood paneling. This is a job most homeowners can easily accomplish with the proper masonry tools and careful measurements. Before using any masonry tools, always locate any electrical wiring or plumbing that might be within the block wall.
